Online terminological data-base for terms in Higher Education (WP 4.9)

As recognised by all major international organisations and networks, terminological consistency is the basis for strong and efficient communication. Based on the state-of-the-art bilingual terminology management tool UGRTerm, developed by terminologists and language policy and internationalisation experts at the University of Granada (, Arqus Work Package 4.9 will examine the feasibility of upscaling the content and functionality of the database to include the Arqus partners’ languages.

The expected output includes the analysis of existing terminological resources at each partner institution and a feasibility study on the upscaling of UGRTerm, which will study the interoperability of the data. Thereafter, a Work Plan will be laid out for the gradual development of specific terminology collections in the partners’ languages. Finally, by 2025, a fully multilingual termbase containing the compiled terms will be made available.

On this page, deliverables from WP 4.9 will be disseminated as will terminology collections produced by the 4.9 work team or in collaboration with other Arqus action lines. Glossaries will be updated on a regular basis. In addition, publicly available terminology resources related to higher education at the partner institutions will be listed.

Arqus Terminology Collections

Arqus Official Multilingual Terminology: This glossary contains the official names in English and translations into the partners’ languages of Arqus work packages; action lines; mission and goals; governance, coordination and advisory structures, etc.

Bilingual Partner’s Institutional Terminology: These glossaries provide the most relevant terminology for the seven institutions in Arqus in the partners’ official languages together with their official English translations. The terms relate to government and academic structures, student services, representative bodies, etc.

Joint Programme Development English Glossary (WP 3.5): This glossary defines the main terms used in the context of Arqus Alliance activities related to the development of joint programmes. It should be understood as a common ground for joint and flexible curricula initiatives that aim at fostering student-centred and research-based learning. The glossary will thus help Arqus to innovate in joint programme development in a wide variety of academic disciplines and interdisciplinary areas, building in a step-by-step fashion on existing academic partnerships and the mobility of students and staff.

Reports and other materials

Arqus Terminology Questionnaire: Quantification and Analysis (2020): This study presents the results of the Arqus Terminology Questionnaire, administered in 2020 among the Arqus partners in WP4.9. The analysis of the data from the eight sections of the questionnaire gives insight into the terminology management needs at the institutions, terminology resources and availability, terminology teams and other terminological issues.

Partner’s Terminology Resources

As a result of the analysis of existing terminological resources at each partner institution, the following sources were identified in relation to higher education terminology.

Termportalen: national terminology portal which offers online searches in a number of databases, including the UHR termbase (no, en) which contains administrative terms in higher education.

UGRTerm: bilingual database (es, en) on academic and institutional terminology specific to the UGR. It also includes terminology related to research, higher education and transversal notions from administrative and legal fields among others. The resource has been develop at the Language Services Unit (USL) of the Vice-Rectorate for Internationalization.

OpenData French-English Higher Education terminology: terms and acronyms (fr, en) related to the French higher education system, research and innovation.

French-English Higher Education glossary: glossary (fr, en) with definitions in French related to higher education, research and training.

Terminology database created at the Department of Translation and Interpreting Studies: multilingual termbase (lt, en, de, fr, it, ru) on the fields of economics, research and higher education based on the terminology used at the Department of Translation and Interpreting Studies of Vilnius University.

Dictionary of Linguadidactic Terms: dictionary of linguadidactic terms defined in Lithuanian with equivalents in several other languages (lt, en, de, fr, ru).

The Term Bank of the Republic of Lithuania: official monolingual termbase (lt) including the field of higher education.

Terms and conditions of use

The use of terminological resources by any end user should respect the conditions established by copyright and intellectual property laws. Similarly, since terminological work often involves data exchange, more specifically, the use of already existing term entries or the fusion of entries from different sources, all such activities should respect the original copyright. Furthermore, Arqus European Alliance adheres to the rules of conduct in the Code of Good Practice for Copyright in Terminology (Infoterm) concerning the exchange, collection, and use of terminological data.

Code of Good Practice for Copyright in Terminology

Where no bilateral agreements have been concluded to the contrary, the following general provisions shall apply as a code of good practice when importing, entering, or exchanging terminological data:

1. Originators’ intellectual property

1.1. Reference to the origin of terminological data shall be explicitly made whenever (all or subsets of) the data are reproduced (output) or passed on to third parties. This applies equally to individual items and to subsets of data from terminological entries or records.

1.2. Where the origin of large volumes of data is to be documented, a single reference to the source may be all that is required when the data are reproduced or transferred. In this case, however, the provider must ensure that the recipient of the data agrees to give due acknowledgement to the originator of the data in all cases.

1.3. Where terminological data have been obtained from an originator who also markets the data himself or herself, the originator’s consent shall be obtained where the data exchanged or taken over are made available to a third party in the form of complete entries or as parts of entries.

1.4. Data under copyright must not be passed on without the agreement of the originator. This does not refer to individual entries or a limited set of individual entries which are to be used for research or teaching purposes under the conditions of exemptions from copyright stipulations as they exist in the Berne Convention and its implementations at national level.

1.5. Financial agreements on licenses and royalties must be observed.

1.6. Institutions and organizations, in which large numbers of users have access to terminological data from an external source (i.e. the author{s} themselves or the economic rights holder{s}, such as a publishing house), are responsible for taking all necessary measures against uncontrolled downloading/copying which violates any rights claimed by the originator{s} or rights holders.

2. Data integrity

2.1. Measures to protect data integrity must be strictly observed and must not be deliberately violated (e. g. by introducing minor changes or by taking data out of context). However, the correction of typographic errors and other obvious mistakes is permissible where justified.
