Academic English before Christmas – A Workshop Series.

English for Academic Purposes courses are becoming more important at university as students are aware of the need to acquire the language skills needed for academic success. In this four-part workshop series that includes a wide range of topics, students from all the Arqus universities will have the chance to improve their skills in academic English.

There are no prerequisites for this course. Students may take part in any or all the four workshops in this series. The use of a webcam and microphone will facilitate discussions, and participants are therefore asked to have access to functioning equipment.

Target group:

Students (BA, MA, PhD) from all the Arqus universities.

Workshop leader:

Mary Waltie, Department Head for English at the Language Center at Leipzig University.

Date and time (CET):

  • Workshop I: Common Errors. 13th December 2021, 16:00–18:15 CET.

The first workshop will address typical errors that intermediate and advanced learners of English face while making the transition from school English to the level required for studying at university. Join us to tackle these challenges in Part I of the four-part workshop series Academic English before Christmas.

Registration deadline: 9th December 2021.

  • Workshop II: Pronunciation Practice. 14th December 2021, 16:00–18:15 CET.

Students often find particular words very difficult to pronounce in English. Having an accent is not the problem – it’s being understood that is important. Join us to tackle some common pronunciation challenges in Part II of the four-part workshop series Academic English before Christmas.

Registration deadline: 9th December 2021.

  • Workshop III: Academic Discussions. 16th December 2021, 16:00–18:15 CET.

Students often find it difficult to participate successfully in academic discussions in English due to shyness or a lack of grammar knowledge and vocabulary. Together, we will take on some of the most common academic discussion challenges in Part III of the four-part workshop series Academic English before Christmas.

Registration deadline: 12th December 2021.

  • Workshop IV: Academic Presentations. 17th December 2021, 16:00–18:15 CET.

One of the most difficult challenges students face is presenting their project in English due to a lack of appropriate language skills and too little practice in conventions and vocabulary. Join us to gain practical tips for presenting successfully in English in Part IV of the four-part workshop series Academic English before Christmas.
