The University of Granada would like to invite the Arqus community to participate in the II edition of the online course on “Machine Learning and Big Data for Bioinformatics” that will be launched next 7th February. The course is free, and the content is offered both in English and Spanish languages.

The course offers practical and applied-learning, accessible to all those interested in Machine Learning and Big Data for Bioinformatics. To do this, a group of university professors, researchers, professionals and specialists in each of the areas will help to introduce this theme in its broadest aspects, combining academic rigour with a simple and direct methodology that allows understanding and enjoyment.

This online course (MOOC) starts on 7th February and it has a duration of 100 hours (8 weeks + 1 additional to finish any part that was not ready yet) and it is given in an asynchronous way (hence there is no need to attend at a given schedule). There is a possibility of obtaining a certificate of having completed the course.

The course is available at the open online teaching platform of the University of Granada (abiertaUGR) and is structured in 8 different modules:

  • Module 1: What is Bioinformatics? Module Coordinators: Carlos Cano, Coral del Val and Pedro Carmona.
  • Module 2: Bioinformatics analysis of a problem in Omics. Module Coordinators: Carlos Cano, Coral del Val and Pedro Carmona.
  • Module 3: Data Science and Machine Learning. Module Coordinator: Alberto Fernández Hilario.
  • Module 4: Supervised Learning: Regression Techniques. Module Coordinator: Rafael Alcalá Fernández.
  • Module 5: Supervised Learning: Classification Techniques. Module Coordinator: Alberto Fernández Hilario.
  • Module 6: Unsupervised Learning: Clustering and Association Rules. Module Coordinator: Jesús Alcalá Fernández.
  • Module 7: Big Data. Module Coordinator: Francisco Javier García Castellano.
  • Module 8: Graphical Tool: KNIME. Module Coordinators: María Martínez and José Manuel Soto.

The different materials and resources for the modules will be available by using the Google Collaboratory platform and will be added to the openUGR platform weekly. The timetable is designed to work on one module each week, but each student can make a time plan that best suits his or her needs. More information is available on Twitter and Facebook (#MOOCml_bioinformatica) or directly on the web of abiertaUGR.

The registration must be done also on the abiertaUGRplatform and the form is in Spanish. If you have any difficulty or question about how to register, please contact Alberto Fernández (alberto@decsai.ugr.es) or Jesús Alcalá (jalcala@decsai.ugr.es).
